Voting in elections

To be eligible to vote in Shire of Trayning’s elections, you must be enrolled on either the State electoral roll (Residents Roll) or the Shire of Trayning’s Non-resident Owners and Occupiers Roll.

Residents Roll

The Residents Roll is maintained by the Western Australian Electoral Commission. People who live in the Shire of Trayning and are enrolled on the State electoral roll will automatically be placed on this roll.

How to check your enrolment

To check whether you are enrolled on the State electoral roll, use the Online Enrolment Check tool provided by the Western Australian Electoral Commission’s website here.

How to enrol

If you are not on the State electoral roll and meet the eligibility criteria, or if you have changed address recently, you must complete an enrolment form via the Australian Electoral Commission website.

In order to be included on the electoral roll for the election, you must enrol no later than 5pm Friday, 28 August 2020.

Non-Resident Owners and Occupiers Roll

If you own a property in the Shire of Trayning  but do not live here or if you operate a business in the Shire of Trayning, you may be eligible to enrol on the Non-Resident Owners and Occupiers Roll.

This roll is maintained by the Shire of Trayning under section 4.30 of the Local Government Act 1995.

To be eligible for this roll, a person must be:

  • Registered on the State electoral roll where they live, and
  • Own a rateable property in the Shire of Trayning OR
  • Occupy a rateable property in the Shire of Trayning. To qualify as an occupier you must:
    • Have a right of continuous occupation under a lease, tenancy agreement or other legal instrument of a property within the Shire of Trayning; and
    • The right of continuous occupation must extend for a period of at least three months.

The Accompanying Notes on page 3 of the Enrolment Eligibility Claim Form contains further information on eligibility, including where there are multiple owners or occupiers in a rateable property or the rateable property is owned by a corporation.

How to check your enrolment

To check whether you are enrolled on the Shire of Trayning’s Non-resident Owners and Occupiers Roll, please contact the Shire’s Admin Office.

How to enrol

If you are not on the Shire of Trayning’s Non-resident Owners and Occupiers Roll and meet the eligibility criteria, you must complete the Enrolment Eligibility Claim Form following the instructions contained within.

Hard copy forms are available at the Shire of Trayning’s administration office.

In order to be included on the electoral roll for the election, forms must be submitted to the Shire no later than 5pm Friday, 28 August 2020.

Enrolment Duration

Occupiers remain on the roll for a period of two elections after their enrolment is accepted and then are taken off the roll six months after the second election per section 4.33 of the Local Government Act 1995.

Occupiers must re-enrol if they wish to continue as electors.

Owners of a rateable property remain on the roll for the duration of the ownership, subject to other eligibility criteria.
